Having a pleasant fragrance in your home can be quite enjoyable, and can change the mood of the space. So if you’re looking to add a good smell to your home, I’m here to share some simple but effective ideas.
In this post, I’m going to talk about the best ways to fragrance your home. I’ll be sharing what I think works well, ways that might not be as effective, as well as the best home fragrance products that I personally recommend.
Ways to Fragrance your Home for a Long Lasting Smell
Since I’m always on the lookout for things that can make my home smell good, I’ve already tried the majority of the products or different ways to fragrance my home. So you can trust that I’m speaking from my own personal experiences and preferences.
I also recommend some scents which are associated with certain ways to fragrance a space. In general, I prefer natural scents over artificial ones, which you’ll notice is reflected in my product recommendations.
But of course scent is something that is highly dependent on personal preference, so what has worked for me may not work for you so well, so let me know what are your go-to ways to fragrance your own home.
PURA DIFFUSER DEVICE
In my opinion, a Pura Diffuser device is the best option if you want a long lasting home fragrance. This is what I use in my own house.
What I Like:
There’s a huge variety of fragrances to choose from, and lots of good scents that I love. You can also buy a Pura Diffuser device and fragrance bottle with diffuser oils from a local store, such as your local Anthropologie stores.
Each fragrance bottle can last a long time, approximately 3-6 months. You can use the same device and just replace the fragrance bottle when the scent runs out. So if you’re planning to use it as a long-term home fragrance, it’s really a great value.
The scent is also very long lasting. You can set a schedule and have the diffuser on for a certain period of time everyday. What I do is I set it to run for about 15 minutes twice a day, which is enough to keep the scent lingering in my home for hours.
What I Don’t Like:
The scent is VERY strong, and that’s probably the reason why it lasts for so long. This is just based on personal preference, but my husband is very sensitive to smell, so he prefers minimal fragrance in our home.
I’ve found that even if I set the intensity level at 1 out of 10, the scent can still be a little strong for him. That’s why I only let the diffuser run for 15 minutes each time, instead of 30 minutes or 1 hour.
Products & Scents I Love:
Pura 4 Diffuser Device
This Pura 4 Diffuser Device is what I use at home, and it’s best for medium to large rooms. You can use it in your bedroom, kitchen, living room, or anywhere you like.
Fig Tree by Anthropologie
As for scents, Fig Tree is what I use in the summertime, since it’s a warm and sweet scent.
Holiday by NEST New York
Holiday is the perfect one for winter, especially around the holiday season, for that cozy comforting scent!
Frasier Fir by Thymes
Frasier Fir is a super popular note (on my wishlist!) that smells like wood and forest trees. It smells natural, which I love, and can appeal to both men and women.
CANDLE
Candles are a classic and effective option if you want to know how to best fragrance your home.
What I Like:
Candles can create a warm and cozy ambiance in a room, especially when lit in the evening. The flickering flame adds a touch of magic and mysterious feel to the space.
There’s a wide range of candle scents available, from fresh and floral to warm and spicy, catering to different preferences and moods. I usually prefer a less sweet scent; something with a woody or fruity note, which I’ve found lots of great options for.
Candles also often come in beautifully designed containers, making them great decor pieces! I’ve used them to style my shelf and table countless times. Their containers come in a variety of colors and textures, so you can mix and match however you like.
What I Don’t Like:
While candles offer a lovely fragrance, they also involve an open flame, which can pose a fire hazard if not used carefully or left unattended.
Candles also have a finite burn time, typically between 20 to 40 hours, so they tend to last shorter compared to other home fragrance products mentioned in this post.
Products I Love:
Cyrnos Classic Candle by Trudon
The Cyrnos Classic Candle by Trudon is definitely on the pricey side, but it’s also one of my favorite candle brands. I have 3 candles from Trudon.
They are better at recreating natural smells than other candle brands in my opinion, and they have a way of immersing you in the world of that scent. Most of Trudon’s fragrances are very unique, and it’s hard to find fragrance products with similar notes in the market.
Rose Candle by Diptyque
Diptyque is another brand famous for their candles. I especially love the Rose Candle from them, which gives off a very classic and romantic vibe.
REED DIFFUSER
What I Like:
Reed diffusers release a steady and long-lasting scent into the room, offering a subtle but continuous fragrance for your home.
Since they operate without an open flame, reed diffusers are generally safer and don’t require constant monitoring compared to candles.
With reed diffusers, you have the flexibility to mix different essential oils to create a custom fragrance blend that suits your preferences. Which reminds me: I’ve been wanting to create my own home fragrance with essential oils!
What I Don’t Like:
The inconsistency of fragrance intensity over time. When I first open the diffuser, the smell is strong. But after a while(weeks to months), the smell dies down quite a bit when it runs out of oil in the bottle.
My trick is to shake the bottle a little or to put the reed diffuser upside down; this would help to bring back the scent for a bit longer.
Products I Love:
Milk and Oatmeal Reed Diffuser by US Apothecary
This Milk and Oatmeal Reed Diffuser is what I use in my home office. I love its warm and cozy smell, coming from the scent of sweet milk and soothing oatmeal. This is also great for the bathroom.
Grey Moss by Pottery Barn
For a more sophisticated and neutral smell, I love this Grey Moss Scent. It’s good for both man and woman caves!
ROOM SPRAY
What I Like:
Room sprays can give your space an instant refresh with a burst of fragrance. These can be great for quickly freshening up a space before guests arrive, or after cooking.
They’re also super easy to use and less messy compared to reed diffusers and candles.
What I Don’t Like:
While room sprays offer a quick fragrance boost, the effect is usually temporary and doesn’t last as long as other options like candles or reed diffusers. I often find it lasts for only a few hours. It might last longer in a smaller space though, like a closet or bathroom.
Products I Love:
Salt-Scented Spray by Hearth & Hand with Magnolia
A nice-smelling affordable option is this Salt-Scented Spray from Hearth & Hand with Magnolia. I like the crispness of the scent, perfect for making a room smell clean.
Baies Spray by Diptyque
And of course, another one from Diptyque! The Baies Spray is one of their unique signature scents, and it really smells like berries. I like using this one in my home office.
Fragrance Products that Don’t Work As Well
Wax Diffuser
Wax diffusers require a warmer and are honestly a bit messy to use. They’re niche products that don’t have a ton of fragrance options. So far, I haven’t been able to find super natural-smelling wax tablets.
Fresh Greeneries and Flowers
I do think this is a great concept, and it can be a cost-free home fragrance option if you already have them in your backyard. But the scent is just so weak unless you are right next to it. So I still don’t think this is a great solution to fragrance your home.
Boiling Spices on a Stove
Aside from requiring a lot of work, this poses a more dangerous fire hazard than just candles. It would also take up burner space on your stove, which isn’t really convenient.
Best Ways to Fragrance your Home Summary
There are lots of ways to fragrance your home, and luckily there are many options depending on what kind of intensity and scent you’re into! So just experiment with what fragrance sparks joy, and you’re sure to be on the right path.
Which of these do you already have in your home? Feel free to share your own product and scent recommendations – I’m in the mood to explore some new scents! 🙂
