Finding Your Perfect Match: A Guide to Choosing the Right Rattan Pendant Light for Your Home
So, you’ve decided to add a rattan pendant light to your home, but how do you choose the right one? Here are some tips to help you find the perfect match.
Size
The first thing to consider is the size of the pendant light. You’ll want to choose a size that’s proportionate to the space you’re lighting.
For example, a large pendant light might overwhelm a small dining room, while a small pendant light might get lost in a large living room.
I often err on the side of going a bit larger than smaller to really make an impact.
Consider the height of your ceilings as well – you don’t want your pendant light to be too low or too high.
A general guideline for pendant light height from the floor is around 72 inches, measured from the floor to the bottom of the pendant light. For the kitchen and dining room, pendant lights are typically hung around 30-36 inches above a tabletop or counter.
Shape
Rattan pendant lights come in a variety of shapes, from round to oval to teardrop. Think about the overall aesthetic of your room and choose a shape that complements it.
For example, if you have a modern and minimalistic room with clean lines, a round rattan pendant light may complement the space well. If you have a more organic or bohemian aesthetic, a more interesting or irregular shape might add a wow factor to your space.
Color
Rattan pendant lights can come in a variety of colors, from natural to black to white. Consider the color scheme of your room and choose a color that either blends in or provides a pop of contrast.
But generally I found the natural rattan color works really well for a variety of interior color palettes. If you want to add a black rattan pendant light to your room, choose the pendant light shade that is more loosely woven instead of a solid black pendant shade.
Pattern
Finally, some rattan pendant lights feature intricate weaves or patterns. If you’re looking for a statement piece, consider a pendant light with a unique design.
However, if you prefer a more subtle look, opt for a pendant light with a simpler weave, as some of the patterns can look very busy, especially bundles with colored reeds.

Rattan Pendant Lights: Pros & Cons
Rattan pendant lights are a popular choice for those looking to add some natural texture to their home décor. Here are some pros and cons to consider when choosing rattan pendant lights.
Pros of Rattan Pendant Lights
Lightweight and Easy to Install
Rattan pendant lights are lightweight and easy to install, making them a great option for renters or those who want to switch up their lighting frequently.
Look and Feel Warm and Cozy
They add a warm and natural feel to any space, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Good for the Environment
Rattan is a sustainable and eco-friendly material, making rattan pendant lights an environmentally conscious choice.
Cons of Rattan Pendant Lights
Can be Easily Damaged
Rattan pendant lights can be fragile and require gentle handling to avoid damage. Because rattan fixtures are made of weaving wet reeds and overlap them, overtime some of the reed ends can come out. But this is an easy fix, just light bend it and stuff it back.
This is something I learnt while making rattan baskets in my free time as a hobby, such as this DIY bottle wrapper. If you worry you may break the reed as you are bending them, wet the reeds first so they become malleable.
Not the most Durable Material out there
While rattan is durable, it may not be as long-lasting as other materials used in pendant lights, such as metal or glass.
Overall, I think rattan pendant lights can add a beautiful and natural touch to any space! And most of the time, those cons don’t bother me at all.
How to Clean Rattan Pendant Lights
After hanging rattan pendant light for a while, just like other light fixtures, you might want to clean them up. But unlike fixtures that were made of metal, you might wonder how to clean rattan pendant lights? Luckily, cleaning them is easy and can be done in several simple ways.
Here are a few methods that range from simple to more thorough cleaning for your rattan pendant light fixtures.
Vacuuming
This is the easiest way to clean a rattan pendant light. All you have to do is vacuum it with a brush attachment to remove any dust and dirt that may have accumulated on the surface.
Brushing
Alternatively, you can use a soft-bristled brush to gently brush off any dirt or dust that has accumulated on the surface of the rattan. Just be careful not to damage the material!
Removing, Washing, and Reinstalling
If you’re looking to give your rattan pendant light a deep clean, you can actually remove the shade and wash it with water. Rattan is pretty resilient when it comes to water, since it’s woven from wet reeds to create its shape. Just be sure to dry the shade thoroughly before popping it back in place to avoid any moisture-related issues. Also their shape can potentially distort in the drying process, so keep an eye on that.
By following these simple steps, you can keep your rattan pendant light looking new and beautiful for years to come!
