If you’re in the market for a new sleeper sofa, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve had the IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa in my home for years, and I’ve put it through its paces.
Now, I’m here to share my honest review with you. In this blog post, I’ll be giving you the rundown on the Finnala Sleeper Sofa, discussing its design, comfort, durability, and whether it’s a worthy addition to your living space.
So, let’s dive in and find out if the IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa is the perfect fit for your needs!
IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa Line
Back in 2018, IKEA came out with one of their best-designed sofas ever: the Vimle. It was such a hit, but now they went ahead and made it even better: the Finnala! Yup, they gave it a whole new name and some nice little improvements.
So, what should you know about the IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa line? It’s got three different types to choose from: the Finnala Sleeper Sofa 2-seater, the 3-seater, and the one with a chaise. These sofas are all part of the Finnala Sleeper family, and they each have their own charm.
But let’s get down to business. Specifically, I’ll be sharing my personal experience with the Finnala Sleeper Sofa 2-seater, and that’s because it can give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from the other two types as well. Let’s get right into it.
Simple yet Sophisticated: IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa Design and Aesthetics
When it comes to design and aesthetics, the IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa offers a range of options to suit different tastes. You can pick from six color options: red-and-white, light beige, dark beige, medium gray, black-blue, and black-gray. This variety allows you to find the perfect match for your home’s decor.
One thing I appreciate about this sofa is that you can also purchase the covers individually. So, if you ever feel like changing up the look of your living room, you don’t need to buy a whole new sofa – just get a different cover!
For my own Finnala Sleeper Sofa, I went with the Gunnared beige cover, which is the light beige one. Though I must say, the photo on the IKEA website doesn’t do justice to the actual color.
In the IKEA Finnala sleeper sofa page, the color appears to be a warm beige. In reality, it’s as light but more on the gray and neutral side, and that’s something I really love. It complements my decor well and gives the whole room a more modern and chic vibe, which I absolutely adore.
IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa Price Point and Assembly
Affordability is one of the things that made me choose the Finnala Sleeper Sofa. Compared to other sleeper sofas that offer queen size beds, it’s a relatively budget-friendly option. For example, West Elm’s Henry Sleeper with queen size bed option goes between $2000 – $3000!
When I bought it a few years ago (before they changed the series name from Vimle to Finnala), it was even cheaper. I remember IKEA was running a sale and it was under $1000.
If you are interested in buying a Finnala sleeper, keep a close eye on IKEA’s upcoming promotion, as they occasionally run events where you can score additional discounts, like a sweet 10% off!
If you don’t mind buying second hand, another great option is to deal hunt at Facebook Marketplace. My friend just bought a set of Finnala sofas from Marketplace for a really sweet deal!
Once you acquired the Finnala sleeper sofa, the assembly process was surprisingly easy and quick. It only took my husband and I about 1 to 2 hours to put it all together. But I would emphasize that having two people for the assembly is highly recommended.
It’s practical to have one person holding the arm up while the other person screws it in, for example. Teamwork makes the dream work, right?
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that since it’s a compact sleeper sofa, it’s a bit heavier than your regular sofa. So, if you’re planning to move it around, you might need a helping hand.
IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa Comfort and Functionality
Using as a Sofa in my Office
The Finnala Sleeper Sofa has become my go-to spot in my home office. It’s pretty comfortable, and I use it daily. I like to put the back cushion next to the sofa arm, turning it into a makeshift chaise.
This way, I can stretch my legs while using my laptop for work. I’ve found this setup perfect for long hours of work, as I prefer the coziness of a couch over a standard office desk and chair.
In terms of sofa cushion firmness, I’d say it’s about medium, slightly softer than my living room sofa, the IKEA FARLOV three seater.
Using as a Guest Bedroom Sleeper Sofa
The Finnala Sleeper Sofa has been a savior when hosting guests in our guest room. We’ve had several groups of guests stay over, and my husband and I also slept on it for over a week when we were renovating our bedroom.
Setting up the bed for guests is a breeze. Just remove the cushions and pull out the mattress. The back cushion can even be used as a soft headboard, or you can simply omit it.
The bed opens up to a queen-size, which provides ample sleeping space for two people. It’s more comfortable than the typical non-mattress sleeper sofas you might come across.
In fact, we tried another sleeper sofa from West Elm before, but we had to return. Since it uses the sofa cushions to form the bed, not a mattress, the “sofa bed” had an uncomfortable gap between the back and the seat cushions
Though it’s comfortable as a sleeper sofa, I personally think that it’s less comfortable compared to a traditional bed due to the thinner mattress which has to fit inside the sofa. The bed slats and legs are less sturdy than a regular bed frame, so I wouldn’t recommend jumping on it.
To sum it up, the Finnala Sleeper Sofa is perfect for hosting guests for stays of less than two weeks. For longer-term guests, I’d opt for a murphy bed or a traditional bed.
There might be more comfortable sleeper sofas available at a higher price point, but for the price of the Finnala, it offers great value, and I genuinely like it for myself.
IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa Maintenance and Cleaning Tips
The Finnala Sleeper Sofa is not just a comfortable and stylish addition to your home; it’s also easy to maintain and keep clean.
The removable and machine washable cover is a real standout feature. The sofa cover is held in place by velcro and zippers, so it is pretty easy to take off and throw in the washing machine.
In my experience after owning this sleeper sofa for four years, I can attest that it still looks new without needing a wash. The color choices, especially the one I picked, do an excellent job of hiding dirt, making it a practical choice for busy households.
Here are a few tips to keep your sofa looking new and nice:
First, I want to share a simple yet effective hack to maintain your sofa’s shape. When I notice the cushions looking a bit squished or saggy, a quick adjustment by hand does the trick. Flipping the cushion inserts around is another easy solution that works wonders.
A fabric shaver has also become my go-to tool for keeping the sofa cover in top shape. After using this sofa for a while, the cover started developing tiny fuzzy balls, giving the fabric a little bit of a worn-out look.
Using the fabric shaver, I can effortlessly remove these fuzz balls, giving the sofa cover a renewed appearance. It’s a handy tool that works wonders not just on the sofa but also on other upholstered furniture, like chairs I have in my office.
Using a fabric steamer has also been a game-changer. After washing the sofa cover or getting a new one, a few minutes of steaming smooths out the fabric and removes any creases, making it look pristine. I haven’t used the steamer for this sofa since I haven’t washed it, but I’ve used it quite a few times on my IKEA FARLOV sofa. It’s a simple yet effective way to refresh the sofa’s appearance.
I also use it to steam my clothes or bed sheets after washing. It is probably one of my most used household tools.
IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa Honest Review Summary
The IKEA Finnala Sleeper Sofa has been a fantastic addition to my home. Its sleek design and versatile color options can blend effortlessly with any decor, adding sophistication to any room. It’s affordable compared to other furniture stores, especially during IKEA events.
Using it as a sofa in my office is comfortable, and I can turn it into a cozy chaise for a relaxing stretch. The medium firmness is just right for me.
As a guest bedroom sleeper sofa, it accommodates guests well, and the setup is easy. Though not as sturdy as a regular bed, it’s still more comfortable than non-mattress sleepers.
Even maintaining the Finnala Sleeper Sofa is super easy with the machine-washable cover and adjustable cushion inserts.
I highly recommend the Finnala Sleeper Sofa, but I still suggest visiting an IKEA store to try the cushions and test the bed’s comfort in person. I can confidently say that it’s a practical and stylish choice for any home.
