If you’re ready to transform your bathroom, then this blog post is sure to help you out. I’ll be spilling the beans on tips and tricks of shower curtain rod height and shower curtain lengths.
Want to know how high your shower curtain rod should be? Or how long a shower curtain really is? Well, you’re in the right place for all the answers!
A Well Designed Shower Curtain Makes Your Bathroom Look More Grand
A well-designed shower curtain can make your bathroom look bigger and more luxurious. To achieve this, you can make your bathroom seem taller and more spacious by lengthening the shower curtain.
You can also raise the curtain rod higher to create the illusion of having more space, which is especially handy in bathrooms with low ceilings. This simple trick can give your bathroom a grander appearance and enhance its overall look.
How High Should You Hang Your Shower Curtain Rod?
When deciding on the height for hanging your shower curtain rod, you need to consider a few important factors.
First, there’s the visual aspect. For bedroom curtains, it’s often a good idea to hang them as high as possible, as this can visually heighten the room and create an elegant look. However, the bathroom is a different story.
In a bathroom space, ensuring proper airflow is very important. During a shower, the steam can accumulate, and excess moisture can lead to issues like mold and deterioration.
To counteract this, you need to allow for effective ventilation. Typically, you should hang the shower curtain 6″-10″ below the ceiling, providing a gap that lets hot steam be ventilated. This is particularly important because bathroom vent fans are not usually positioned right near the shower area.
But if your ventilation is right above the shower area, you have some flexibility. In that case, you can raise the shower rod higher, leaving a 1-4″ gap from the ceiling.
To find the ideal curtain length, you can use a simple formula: subtract the room’s height from the distance to the ceiling, distance to the floor, and the space needed for the curtain rod and hooks. For many bathrooms, an 84″ or 7-foot curtain works well for this setup.
This not only keeps your bathroom looking good but also ensures a healthier environment, which can protect it from the effects of excess moisture.
How To Determine Your Shower Curtain Length
Now that we know how high to hang our curtain, let’s look into how long your shower curtain should be.
Standard Shower Curtain Length
When setting up your shower curtain, consider the standard size: 72×72 inches. Usually, bathroom ceilings are around 96 inches high. That leaves a 2-foot gap which might not look as nice.
To visually enhance the room, I suggest hanging the curtain close to both the ceiling and the floor, leaving just a 2-4 inch gap from the ground.
For a standard 8-foot ceiling, an 84-inch curtain works well. This way, you can keep a 2-inch gap to the floor while positioning the curtain rod 10 inches below the ceiling. Alternatively, you can have a 4-inch gap from the floor and the curtain 8 inches below the ceiling.
Personally, I wanted my shower curtain to sit 4 inches above the floor. I used this super fast and easy DIY way to lengthen my shower curtain, and I was able to extend my standard 72-inch curtain by 10 inches to reach 82 inches in total.
This allowed me to keep my curtain liner overlapping with the bathtub to avoid water seepage. Plus, I even achieved the visual effect of making my bathroom look taller.
So, it’s a bit about finding the right balance between your ceiling height, your style preference, and your practical needs.
