In this post, we’ll dive into the world of farmhouse kitchen tiles to choose the perfect backsplash for your home, whether you are into a farmhouse, cottage, or traditional style!
If you’re seeking that perfect blend of rustic charm and traditional style, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve handpicked the top five farmhouse-inspired tiles that will effortlessly enhance your kitchen’s appeal.
Now let’s explore the art of choosing backsplash tiles and how they can bring a touch of farmhouse magic to your beloved kitchen!
Factors to Consider when Choosing Backsplash for your Farmhouse Kitchen
Material
The material of your backsplash is crucial for both durability and easy maintenance. Opt for surfaces that are easy to clean, as the kitchen is prone to spills and splatters.
Some common materials for backsplash tiles are porcelain, marble, and glass. For a farmhouse style, I don’t recommend glass tiles as they tend to look cheap and too modern.
One popular choice is glazed porcelain tiles, as they offer a protective layer that makes cleaning a breeze compared to unglazed options. Glazed ceramic tiles also offer a range of color and textures, making it so easy to match your backsplash to the rest of kitchen decor and cabinetry.
If you love marble tiles to add an elegant touch, I’d recommend choosing a polished finish as it is less porous and can clean up easily. On the contrary, honed marble tiles are more porous and it can be harder to wipe off the oil splatters or tomato sauce without leaving a stain.
Color
The color of your backsplash sets the tone for your farmhouse kitchen. Aim for colors that complement the overall mood of your kitchen or select a neutral and timeless one so it goes well with your kitchen no matter how you style it.
Earthy tones, such as beige, soft grays, or creamy whites, often work well in farmhouse kitchens, as they evoke a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
Muted colors or subtle patterns can also add visual interest without overpowering the space. Personally, I would avoid any high contrast and large scale patterns, as they can often look busy, unless you can keep your kitchen super minimalistic and clutter free (which I find very challenging to achieve).
Size and Shape
The size and shape of backsplash tiles plays an important role and can greatly impact the overall appearance of your kitchen backsplash. Larger tiles can create a more modern and streamlined look, providing a sleek backdrop for your farmhouse kitchen, if your kitchen style is skewing modern.
On the other hand, smaller tiles, such as subway or mosaic tiles, can add a touch of vintage charm and texture to your space.
Even for the same tile, how you arrange them can alter the look. Stacking them vertically or horizontally feels more mid-century, whereas arranging them in a subway manner feels more traditional.

If you are into the look of zellige tile, there can be two type of backsplash tile options depending on your budget and preference:
MOROCCAN ZELLIGE 4X4” CERAMIC WALL TILE
Embrace the rustic charm of this Moroccan Zellige 4×4″ Ceramic Wall Tile, where imperfections become the embodiment of beauty!
When tiling, many people choose to leave no grout line and just embrace the nature gaps and irregular lines created by the tile shape itself.
One down side of natural zellige tiles is they can be quite thick: 1/2″ for 4″x4″ square tile or 7/8″ for rectangle tile, comparing to porcelain tiles that are often 3/8″ or less. I live in a small house, most of the space I’m tiling are not spacious. Even though I really love the look of zellige tiles, I don’t want to take way over 1″ of space from every wall I tile.
The good news is that nowadays some company has released “thin” rectangle zellige tiles to replace 7/8″ thickness, such as this one.
AMAGANSETT 2X8″ CERAMIC SATIN WALL TILE
Amagansett 2″ x 8″ Ceramic Satin Subway Wall Tile a budget-friendly alternative that captures the essence of real zellige without breaking the bank!
While authentic zellige tiles can be pricey and more difficult to tile, this faux zellige tile offers a significantly more affordable option.
With its sleek and satin finish, it brings a touch of Moroccan-inspired flair to your space, allowing you to achieve that organic and rustic vibe without compromising on style or your budget.
Mosaic Tiles in Classic Patterns
There’s something undeniably captivating about using mosaic tiles in classic patterns for your kitchen backsplash.
The intricate pattern formed by smaller tile pieces bring the element of repetition and a touch of personality to your culinary space, elevating the overall aesthetic and becoming a conversation starter.
Whether you opt for a herringbone, basketweave, or chevron pattern, the interplay of colors and textures in mosaic tiles adds depth and visual interest, creating a stunning focal point.
Before going with my marble subway backsplash, I had strongly considered using white herringbone tile for my kitchen. Maybe someday I’ll do it for my future kitchen!
THASSOS 1″ X 4″ NATURAL STONE HERRINGBONE / CHEVRON TILE
Thassos 1″ x 4″ Natural Stone Herringbone / Chevron Tile is a classic yet not boring mosaic backsplash that effortlessly adds pattern and interest to your kitchen!
The timeless herringbone pattern, with its diagonal lines, brings a dynamic visual appeal that complements almost any interior style.
To achieve a balanced look, I would recommend opting for simpler colors or materials that harmonize with the pattern that doesn’t overwhelm the space, such as white marble. For the grout, I’ll also opt for a low contrast color.

This is the tile I chose for my rental properties so I can stretch my budget for more updates. It modernize the space without hitting the budget too hard. Plus, if any tile gets damaged, it is so easy to replace that particular piece to prepare for the next tenant.
How to Clean and Maintain your Farmhouse Kitchen Backsplash Tiles
Cleaning and maintaining kitchen backsplash tiles is essential for preserving their beauty and longevity. Let’s by honest, tiling is a lot of work and definitely an expensive upgrade, so making them last as long as possible is always nice!
To begin, it is important to regularly wipe the tiles with a soft, damp cloth to remove any surface dust or debris. I generally start with wet paper towels, and move to all purpose cleaner for more stubborn stains. Btw, avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads that may damage the tile surface, unless you have saved some spare tiles to test them out first.
After your tiles are tiled or just cleaned, it is recommended to apply a tile and grout sealer to protect them from stains and discoloration. With porcelain tiles or other non porous tiles, this step is to seal the grout. For porous tiles such as marble or stone, you can seal the grout and tile in one go!
