Where do you place paper napkins in at your home? I had a napkin holder dilemma – there’s so few pretty napkin holder options out there. Although I have done quite some extensive searches, there’s only a couple cute ones, such as this and this. At the end I’m just not 100% convinced with the style of pricing. So I started to wonder if I can DIY a napkin holder that fits my home style and budget?

In case you are wondering, I have also thought about using fabric napkins. They are pretty, add great textures, and most importantly they are reusable, better for the environment. If I use fabric napkins, it would solve the napkin holder dilemma! The issue is: we don’t do laundry often, probably once every 2 weeks. So to make it work, I’ll have to have a lot of fabric napkin sets. My hope is to buy those bamboo paper napkins to be more environmental.

DIY napkin holder basket

I know I have to be creative on this, and immediately my eyes moved onto a basket which I thrifted a few weeks back:

I got this shallow woven basket from my local Goodwill for under two bucks. The original color is very orange, looking pretty dated. So I gave it a small makeover. I diluted some leftover chalk paint in gray and give the entire basket a light gray wash. After the wash dried up, it instantly looks more sophisticated and expensive. Doesn’t it look like something you get from Pottery Barn? Except it only cost two dollars.

Because I got it from a thrift store, and haven’t got a chance to really clean it up inside out and sanitize it. I don’t feel completely comfortable putting the napkin in and then use it to touch my mouth later on. So I added a fabric lining. This fabric lining is very easy to make, and require no sewing at all. I took some leftover fabric from my throw pillow project, and created a tassel-like finish on the edges, instead of hemming it with a sewing machine. You can read more on this technique from my upcoming no sew table runner post (coming up in 2 weeks!).

The end result is a french country farmhouse napkin holder! It looks so cute and is definitely one of a kind! I hope this post inspire you to DIY your own napkin holders, if you have faced the same problem.

DIY napkin holder basket variation

There can be quite some variation too. A square basket can be even better than my rounded basket, as the napkin will fit more perfectly inside. In my rounded basket, A standard sized napkin get pushed a little bit on the corners. If you have a rectangle basket, you can add a little vase of flowers(faux or real), or some cute decors to fill the empty space!
