In this post, I’m sharing modern farmhouse style – one of the most loved interior style by interior designers and stylists.
Have you found out what your interior style is?
Do you get turned on when there is a style quiz? I can still remember whenever I see those quizzes, I get so excited to find out what style I am. Like most people, you probably have a unique style that is not 100% of one interior style word, like mid century, minimalist, bohemian, etc. You may feel like you like farmhouse, but not every details of it. You may feel that you want to tweak the style a bit to be completely happy with it.
That happens to me a lot. I remember I was always in search for that specific interior style word that can describe what I like 100%. But I was never able to find that word. It really took me a while to understand that my style is really a combination of things. Some of those things can even be hard to describe into words, because it is just a vibe I can feel when I see it.
I’m still honing my style: what I liked a year ago may not be what I love now. So I’m starting a mini series to share some of my favorite interior styles, and to appreciate styles inspired me and influenced my style.
How I discover modern farmhouse style
I want to start this series with modern farmhouse style because it is the first style I “see” on the internet world. Also it is the modern farmhouse photos that got me into the interior decorating world.
Although I was always interested in interior, but I was not aware of it. I would tour around IKEA and feel that each individual styled space looks so nice, but had no concept of it is something I can do. Born in a family with engineer and scientist, I knew no designers or artist in real life to realize decorating space is a thing.
So being exposed to Instagram interior photos really light me up internally and make me realize interior design is a thing, a hobby. It all started one day when I saw a photo of a modern farmhouse space. Discover one person after another, and someone mentioned someone else on Instagram, I uncovered the land of interior design, thanks to those photos of modern farmhouse spaces.
Beautiful modern farmhouse spaces
So what is modern farmhouse style? I’m sure people define it differently, but in general it is modernized farmhouse style: It looks a bit traditional but not formal; It feels cozy and homey, but the looks is more streamlined; It is also less rustic than a traditional farmhouse style.
This post would probably be drier than an overcooked chicken if I talk and talk without showing any photos. So I’m sharing some of my favorite spaces in this style:
This space has many signature farmhouse elements, the painted white planked walls, white cabinet with black hardware, rustic floor, wooden doors. Compare to a traditional farmhouse, this space feels more modern and chic.
I love a good 2-tone kitchen cabinet, like this one. They look so harmonious together.
This cute bathroom is breathtaking! Repurpose old dressers into bathroom vanity is very farmhouse-y!
This dining nook is darling! I’ve also used it as an inspiration for my dining room renovation. You can check out my renovation plan here.
The modern pendant light and woven bar stool makes this space a beautiful farmhouse with a modern twist.
This bedroom feels so cozy! The vertical shiplap wall and wood nightstand definitely added some rustic flare.
This white kitchen is so clean, airy. Those beautiful flowers in the farmhouse sink adds more romance to the space.
I’m obsessed with these chandelier! The starburst detail under the linen shade adds more personality and whimsy to the space. Those painted pale blue bed are absolutely cute.

A few kitchen photos show brass handles and a brass faucet that seems to match. Which faucet is it? The ones I’ve seen, like Kohler, are much more orange in color.
